British born stylist, Deborah Latouche, is rooted in the British fashion scene. A regular stylist for The Sunday Times, with a number of celebrity clients such as Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Naomie Harris and Martin Freeman under her belt. As the UK Corresponding Editor for Italian Elle, Deborah has written and contributed about fashion trends and interviews to its pages for a number of years. To say that she understands British fashion therefore is an understatement.
Much like her brand, Deborah is brimming with inspiration when we chat. After making the decision to become a Muslim eighteen years ago and within this transition, Deborah struggled to find modest wear that was both high-end and well-made, using natural fabrics such as silks. Having also noticed a gap in the market for modest wear whilst styling, Deborah realised the need for a brand that would appeal to all women.
“Women wanted to dress for themselves and not for the male gaze,” Deborah says of the clients she styled before launching her brand. Deborah tells me of the women she styled who weren’t happy with the revealing clothes that were in the marketplace and, “SABIRAH bridged that gap, crossing over to many different women.” Although Deborah is designing from the perspective of a Muslim woman, SABIRAH is very much about, “the elevation of ALL women regardless of size, religion or race.”
This kick-started her luxury modest brand SABIRAH back in February 2020, where she acts as both the Creative Director and Designer. SABIRAH delivers refined and luxurious collections that transcend boundaries with exquisite tailoring in beautiful fabrics.
The brand is unique in that everything is made to measure here in the UK. Fabrics are hand-chosen by Deborah from Italian mills, using end-of-roll fabrics resulting in collections that are just as exclusive as they are sustainable. Deborah speaks of the enduring source of inspiration from her fabric sourcing trips and how the hours spent hand-picking fabrics for her collections ensures something beautiful and unique for her clients.
When we discuss future plans for SABIRAH, Deborah says menswear is next on the cards. Deborah has always styled women and men equally and has fond memories of raiding her uncle’s wardrobe – his double-breasted Crombie coats weigh heavily on her mind as we discuss her ambitions. The British singer, songwriter and producer MNEK has already worked with SABIRAH on a number of custom pieces and so the transition to include menswear seems like an obvious evolution for the brand. SABIRAH also sees an opportunity for an atelier in the next five years, centred around innovation and collaboration, with international opportunities on the horizon.
“We believe in the elevation of ALL women regardless of size, religion or race.” SABIRAH
