Sustainable Fashion Week is back for it's third year
Join in with their #MendItMay campaign and extend the life of a garment or accessory
Across the month of May, Sustainable Fashion Week’s #MendItMay campaign invites people to mend one piece of clothing, celebrating repair as an act of empowerment. Founder, Amelia Twine, gives us all the important details on how you can get involved.
The campaign runs across Instagram, and in a number of local and digital workshops, and showcases the different ways of repairing garments and accessories to keep them out of landfill. With free repair tutorials shared on social media, and organisations like Finisterre, Parents for Future UK and Repair What You Wear taking part - this year’s #MenditMay looks to save at least 200 items through technical or creative repairs. So far, in the first 12 days we’ve already hit 109 garments.
Repair is a powerful action. Often requiring little more than a needle and thread, repair maintains the integrity and value of a garment - honouring the resources, people and provenance of the raw materials that created it. By repairing a piece of clothing, it is likely to be kept for a further 1.3 years (WRAP), and by extending the life of a garment by an extra 9 months, you reduce it’s environmental impact by 20-30% (Traid).
Join in with the #MenditMay campaign by repairing one item, taking a pic and celebrating it on Instagram - tagging @sustainablefashionweek_uk and using the hashtag.
